Equipment and Oxygen:

Compressors, percussors, nebulizers, postural drainage boards, and oxygen equipment are provided to all individuals with CF, on a cost-sharing basis through the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) and Home Oxygen Program (HOP) of the Ontario Ministry of Health. Generally, ADP will cover 75% of the vendor’s selling price up to a set maximum amount.

That portion of the costs not covered by ADP may be covered by a private health insurance plan. Equipment is ordered though local medical supply companies. If the individual requiring the equipment is receiving benefits from Ontario Works (OW), Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD), the equipment vendor may be able to bill ADP for a higher amount, therefore reducing or eliminating the cost to the individual. ADP will contribute towards the replacement cost of equipment that is no longer working or cannot be repaired, based on a replacement period schedule, with times ranging between 2 to 5 years.

Contact the CF clinic coordinator for details on availability and servicing, or contact ADP and HOP directly at:

Drug Plan:

All CF-related medications listed by the Ministry of Health as of March 8,1995, including insulin, are covered through the Special Drugs Program, provided the patient is registered at an Ontario CF Clinic, and the required drugs are dispensed by a designated hospital pharmacy. As of July 15, 1996, individuals covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit plan because they receive social assistance, are responsible for a charge of $2 per prescription.

Newer medications can be obtained on a co-payment basis through the Trillium Drug Program, which was established in July 1995. Pulmozyne® can be accessed through this program. Through the Section 8 process, CF physicians are able to apply for coverage of TOBI® for individuals with CF. Decisions related to coverage of TOBI® are made on a case-by-case basis.
